CG is 1!

20 Million Stitches & 500 Stories

One year ago, Cobblestones & Grits started with an embroidery machine, an idea, and absolutely no way of knowing where any of it would lead.

And now, somehow, CG is ONE.

In our first year:

• 742 pieces embroidered.
• More than 20 MILLION stitches.
• 225 bobbins.
• Nearly 14 miles of thread.
• Almost 500 customers.
• 500 homes.
• 500 stories.

Twenty. Million. Stitches.

I have to admit, even I had to sit with that number for a minute.

That’s a lot of thread. A lot of bobbin changes. A lot of listening to an embroidery machine running in the background. And definitely a few more broken needles than I’d care to count.

But when I look back at this first year, those aren’t really the numbers that mean the most to me.

It’s the 500 homes and 500 stories behind them.

500 Homes. 500 Stories.

Nearly 500 people have trusted CG to create something for them this year.

That means pieces from this little business are now hanging on front doors, sitting around dinner tables, wrapped around wedding bouquets, tucked into gifts and pulled out for holidays and celebrations.

And every single one has a story.

There’s the wreath sash that welcomes people through the front door.

The embroidered napkins that come out before family arrives.

The monogram chosen for a wedding gift.

The college colors that announce exactly which team a house will be cheering for on Saturday.

The piece made in memory of someone.

The gift someone couldn’t wait to give.

That’s what those 742 pieces really represent.

Not inventory.

Stories.

The Story Behind

This Story

If you’ve followed CG for a while, you probably know that this business has a story of its own.

It started with an embroidery machine that belonged to my late mother-in-law and a talent passed down from my own mother  

I didn’t sit down with a five-year business plan and decide I was going to build Cobblestones & Grits.

I started creating.

Then someone bought something.

Then someone else did.

And little by little, one stitch at a time, CG started becoming something I never expected.

Looking back over this first year, though, there’s one thing I feel very strongly:

God’s hand has been all over it.

There have been doors that opened at exactly the right time.

People who found CG that I never could have reached on my own.

Opportunities that seemed to appear out of nowhere.

And encouragement that came on the exact days I needed it.

There have also been mistakes.

Late nights.

Designs that absolutely did not turn out the way I pictured them.

Markets that were wonderful and markets that were… let’s call them character building.

But through all of it, God has been faithful.

This year has reminded me that we don’t always get to see the entire plan before we’re asked to take the first step.

Sometimes you simply use what you’ve been given, do the work that’s in front of you, and trust God with where it goes next.

For me, that first step happened to involve an embroidery machine.

Twenty million stitches later, here we are.

Southern Stories, Stitched.

When I started using the words Southern Stories, Stitched, I knew what I wanted them to mean.

A year later, I think I understand them even more.

I never wanted Cobblestones & Grits to simply make things.

I wanted to make pieces that become part of the way people live.

The wreath sash that comes back out every Christmas.

The napkins your family recognizes because they’re always on the Thanksgiving table.

The monogram that makes something unmistakably yours.

The little embroidered piece that eventually becomes tied to a memory.

Southern homes have always told stories through the things we keep, display, use and pass down.

And now there are nearly 500 homes with a little piece of CG in them.

That may be my favorite number of all.

The CG Birthday

Summer Sangria

We’re celebrating one year of CG with something perfect for the final days of summer: a cold, fruity Summer Sangria.

You’ll need:

• 1 bottle chilled dry white wine
• 1/2 cup peach schnapps
• 1/2 cup peach nectar or white grape juice
• 1 peach, thinly sliced
• 1 orange, thinly sliced
• 1 cup strawberries, sliced
• 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
• 1 lime, thinly sliced
• Club soda or sparkling water
• Fresh mint

To make it:

Add the peaches, strawberries, blueberries, orange and lime to a large pitcher.

Pour in the wine, peach schnapps and peach nectar. Stir everything together and refrigerate for at least two hours.

Just before serving, add a generous splash of club soda or sparkling water.

Pour over ice, garnish with fresh mint and a few pieces of fruit, and enjoy.

And obviously, serve it with your prettiest cocktail napkins.

It’s a birthday. Use the good stuff.

Those numbers are incredible to look back on.

But the one I keep coming back to is this:

500 homes. 500 stories.

Every one represents someone who decided to support this little business.

Someone chose CG for their front door.

Their dinner table.

Their wedding.

Their holiday.

Their gift.

Their story.

Whether you’ve purchased something, stopped by a market booth, shared a post, told a friend about CG, liked a photo or simply followed along — thank you.

And most importantly, thank You, God.

For the doors that opened.

For the ones that didn’t.

For the people placed in my path.

For the lessons.

For the opportunities.

And for taking one embroidery machine and a little idea and turning it into something I never could have mapped out myself.

I don’t know exactly what Year Two will look like.

After Year One, I think I’m okay with that.

I’ll keep showing up, keep creating, keep trusting — and apparently, keep buying thread.
